I used to think getting into AI tools meant signing up for a stack of subscriptions before I'd even tested whether any of it worked for me. Turns out that's backwards.

Most of the tools I actually use started free. ElevenLabs has a free tier that's plenty to test whether AI voiceover sounds good enough for what you need. CustomGPT lets you build and test a chatbot before you commit to a paid plan. Writesonic has a free trial that's enough to see if the writing style fits your voice. None of these required me to pull out a card before I knew if the tool was worth it.

The actual cost only shows up once you're already convinced something's working. I didn't pay for ElevenLabs until I knew the voices were perfect for what I needed them for. I didn't upgrade CustomGPT until I had a business ready to use the chatbot. The free tier did the convincing, the paid tier came after.

This myth mostly comes from people assuming AI tools are priced like enterprise software, all annual contracts and sales calls. Most consumer-facing AI tools are priced more like a Netflix subscription. Cancel anytime, month to month, and usually a free tier to test the waters first.

If the budget concern has been the thing stopping you, it's probably not as real a barrier as it feels like. Start with the free tier of whatever you're curious about and see if it earns the upgrade.
