If you've been putting off trying any AI tools because it felt like an expensive rabbit hole, this is the month that assumption stopped being true.

The big story right now isn't a flashy new chatbot personality or another "AI can now do X" headline. It's pricing. OpenAI cut its GPT-5.6 Luna pricing by 80% to $0.20 per 1 million input tokens this month, and ChatGPT hit roughly 1 billion weekly active users. Translation for anyone who know AI pricing tables: the cost of running these tools behind the scenes just dropped dramatically, and that drop tends to trickle down into cheaper subscriptions and more generous free tiers for the tools built on top of them.

This matters more than it sounds like it should. A lot of the AI tools I test and recommend here, the CustomGPTs and ElevenLabs and Writesonics of the world, are themselves built on top of these bigger models. When the underlying cost to run a model drops 80%, that's room for the tools using it to either lower prices, raise usage limits, or both. Model costs are falling broadly, not just at one company, with both OpenAI and Google pushing prices down this month.

The second piece of this month's news that actually affects everyday use is that AI agents, meaning tools that can go complete a task on their own rather than just answer a question, are showing up in more everyday products now. This is the shift from "ask a chatbot a question" to "tell a tool to go do something and check back later." It's part of why some of the tools I've tested lately feel noticeably more capable than they did even a few months ago.

What this actually means if you've been on the fence

If cost has been the thing holding you back, the timing is pretty good right now. Free tiers across a lot of these tools are getting more generous as the underlying costs drop, not less. This is the opposite of the usual pattern where a product starts cheap and gets more expensive as it grows.

I wouldn't rush out and subscribe to five new things because of a pricing headline. But if there's a tool you've been curious about and talked yourself out of because of cost, this is a reasonable moment to actually go check the current pricing again. It's probably changed since the last time you looked.
